The Ultimate Driving Playlist

obviously

When you hear a song that is just perfect for driving to, you know it. Somehow, we are innately programmed to understand which songs make a great soundtrack for inhabiting a moving vehicle. They are soundtracks to a new beginning, or a wild chase, or just a lazy Friday night. Here are some of my all-time favorites.

1. The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)

For: Peeling out of the driveway, windows down, hair whipping in the breeze.

2. Hozier – From Eden

For: Rolling through the streets of a small town where folks are just leaving the First Methodist Church to go have breakfast at Joe’s diner.

3. Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody

For: Waking up the people in the back seat.

4. Elbow – One Day Like This

For: Passing through a few miles of rolling wheat fields.

5. LFO – Summer Girls

For: Cruising down the coastline in search of the perfect wave.

6. Ben Nichols – The Last Pale Light in the West

For: Riding off into the sunset.

7. Sara Bareilles – I Choose You

For: Introspective lip-syncing when no one is looking.

8. The Lumineers – Classy Girls

For: Driving down a quiet road at night under the street lights after a drink with an old friend.

9. Cee-Lo Green – I Want You

For: Running away from your own wedding while the reception is still going, undoing clothing as you go.

10. Death Cab for Cutie – Passenger Seat

For: Leaning against the window and watching the stars as someone else drives you home on a cold, clear night.

11. Bastille – Daniel in the Den

For: Climbing that giant hill that the car has to fight against.

12. Sigur Ros – Glosoli

For: Cresting the top of that hill as the sunrise bursts over the horizon.

13. Oliver Tank – Up All Night

For: Calming down after that asshole cuts you off.

14. Ennio Morricone – Per Qualche Dollaro in Piu

For: Arriving at your destination and pulling out your six shooter.
